We haven't closed it off the the public because we wanted to give people the chance to see it and look around. That being said, content for the site is in the works and we're doing our best to finish up. We ask that you, if you're interested in joining us, please be patient.
Cattle- Most domesticated cattle in Suviel are black angus, hereford, and holstein cattle. They provide milk, meat, and leather to the residents of Virgis and Toria. A few specialty breeds, like brahmin cattle, are farmed but tend to be more rare. In Masmous there are fewer cattle, as the residents prefer to rely on goats. However, the criollo cattle is the most common breed in the southern kingdom.
Sheep- In Suviel Dorset sheep are prized for their succulent meat while long-wool sheep are valued for the warmth and quality of the wool they produce. Good for both wool and meat and one of the most common sheep is the suffolk, which can be identified by its black face and legs. The merino sheep is prized for its soft, high quality wool which is used for more elegant and delicate clothing that is unsuitable for daily use.
Pigs- There is no single breed of common pig in Suviel. Almost all of them are large, pink-skinned and are used almost exclusively for their meat. A few specialty breeds with especially desirable meat, such as the belt pig (dark colored with a band of lighter colored skin near the front legs). Very few pigs are found within the borders of Masmous, where the climate is much too warm and dry to sustain the animal.
Goats- Goats are prized for both their meat and their milk. The milk is often more valued than the milk that cows produce, especially in the southern deserts of Masmous. The saanen goat is the most common species of goat found in Virgis and Toria. They tend to produce the most high quality milk of any breed. The saanen goat is usually white, though it can have splotches of brown and black, and can weigh up to one hundred pounds. Other breeds do exist, such as the nubian goat with the high fat content in its milk and the boer goat for its good meat. In Masmous people tend to favor the nubian goat for it's hot and dry weather tolerance.
Equines- Horses are often the backbone of Suviel. In Virgis and Toria heavier breeds are often favored for labor. These include draft breeds such as a Clydesdale and the Percheron. Nobles tend to favor fancier, gaited breeds such as the Morgan horse, the Hanoverian, or the Lusitano. Those who cannot afford pure-bred horses often have graded - crossbred - horses of no particular lineage that are suited for whatever work is needed. Some nobles who like racing breed such horses like Thoroughbreds. In Masmous thinner, faster breeds that are well-suited for the desert are chosen. These include such elegant breeds as the Arabian and Akhal Teke, which are both strong and swift. Donkeys and mules are common work animals on farms and within the Masmodian tribes.
Camels- The only breed of camel in Suviel is the dromedary camel. It is used largely in the southern kingdom of Masmous for transportation of goods. Few, if any, camels can be found in Virgis or Toria. It is not uncommon to see caravans of camels traveling through the desert of Masmous, moving goods to and from settled locations. Merchants in the area favor the beasts over horses because of their strength. Carts can be difficult to move through the desert so pack animals that can carry large amounts of goods are important to survival.
Fowl- Several breeds of chicken are kept through Suviel, even in hotter climates. Some produce larger eggs, others better meat. In the desert there are fewer domesticated fowl species, though geese may be found in the more forgiving areas where water is available. In Virgis and Toria it is more likely to see chickens, geese, ducks, and even turkey on farms.
Rur Mastiff- A very large mastiff characterized by its size and its dark fur, the rur mastiff is often used as a guard dog for shops and homes, among other things. They are fiercely loyal to their masters and will defend their charges to the death if need be.
Deer- Common throughout Virgis and Toria, deer are one of the primary wild game animals found throughout the land. The most common, mule and white-tailed deer; have a range that includes everything from mountains to plains. The more rare fallow deer prefers the cooler, damp climates in Toria. Roe deer are also common in heavily forested areas and are a little smaller than their other counterparts. All of the species of deer shed their antlers during winter and begin to grow a new pair in the spring. There are no native species of deer found in Masmous.
Elk- Less common than deer and preferring the northern reaches of Virgis and Toria, Elk are less commonly sought after as game animals due to their fewer numbers. More often it's easier for hunters to find deer than it is to find an elk. Still, their meat is treasured and their larger size means more meat to go around. Elk are similar to deer in that they shed their antlers and regrow them each year. Unlike deer, they tend to be darker in color and are nearly twice as large as their smaller cousins.
Antelope- Pronghorn antelope can be found in parts of Masmous territory, along the edges of the desert where there are dry, endless plains. Though they are similar to deer, they are much more difficult to hunt because of their speed and agility. These swift, smaller cousins of deer can maintain high speeds for long amounts of time but are poor jumpers. The people of Masmous have become adept at hunting these antelope despite their quickness and small stature.
Wild Boar- Wild boar are bulky, large creatures with thin, short legs. The head is heavy, the snout being large and the neck so thick and short that it is nearly immobile. Males of the species are typically much larger than the females. They live in matriarchal groups called sounders. While not fully aggressive, when agitated their tusks can be used as effective and deadly weapons. Some hunt these animals for sport because of the challenge those dangerous tusks present. Sometimes they are sought out as game animals, though deer are easier targets. They range throughout most of Suviel, with the exception of the driest, most inhospitable parts of the desert.
Bighorn Sheep- The sheep that range the Thazmuth mountains are named for the large, curved horns of the rams. These horns can weigh up to thirty pounds on their own, while she sheep can weigh up to three hundred pounds besides that if the conditions are right. The females also have horns, but they are much smaller and less pronounced. They live in large herds led by more than one ram. The females follow a strict, age-based hierarchy while the males fight using their horns for access to the females. Because these animals love high mountain cliffs they can be difficult to hunt. The mountain lion is their one true natural predator.
Rodents & Small Mammals- All of Suviel is home to a variety of rodents and small mammals, some more common than others. Among the smallest are the mouse, vole, shrew, and mole. There are several species of squirrel and chipmunk living in the forests around Virgis and Toria. Several species of mice, such as the dormouse and pocket mouse, have adapted to the drier climate of Masmous. Other small rodents and mammals include the hedgehog, the common rabbit and hare, the beaver, the porcupine, weasels, stoats, minks, and pine martens. There are also several species of bats, the most common being the common pipistrelle and the long eared bat.
Birds & Waterfowl- A large number of birds call Suviel home. There are several species of duck, from the common mallard to the wigeon and pochard. Greater and lesser white-fronted geese are the only species of wild geese on the continent. Other waterfowl include spoonbills, herons, the occasional swan, and bitterns. The common blackbird can be found all over the continent. Other birds that make their home here are the goldfinch, greenfinch, stonechat, robin, and plover.
Bears- The largest predators in Suviel are bears. They can be found in both the black and brown varieties, with the brown bears slightly larger than their black relatives. Though similar in appearance, the two bears have different skills. Black bears are good climbers whereas brown bears are much less likely to climb at all. Black bears are more likely to retreat from confrontation when possible, but brown bears are more likely to defend themselves. Bears are shy creatures that will avoid people as much as possible. They remain solitary for most of their lives and are usually only dangerous when provoked. Their diets vary from fish and small animals to berries, roots, and grasses. They will even eat carrion when it is available.
Mountain Lions- The largest cat species in Suviel, the mountain lion is a fearsome predator. It ranges throughout the continent with no real preference of terrain. Canyons, mountains, and forests are excellent hunting ground for the big cats. Often they hunt from tree limbs or ledges, waiting for their prey to wander beneath them before leaping from above to deliver a quick death blow. Usually varying shades of tawny brown to silvery gray, these cats blend in with their surroundings exceeding well. Though their range covers much of the continent, they are a relatively uncommon predator in comparison to the lynx or wolf.
Lynx- Common across much of Virgis and Toria, the lynx is a medium-sized predatory cat that hunts small game such as rodents and birds and even the small roe deer. Smaller than a mountain lion but larger than a house cat, it is usually not a danger to a full-grown person, but it has been known to target unprotected young children in times of desperation. These large cats can be recognized by their golden or beige fur, bobbed tail, and black tufts of hair at the tips of their ears.
Wolves- Suviel is home to three different subspecies of wolves. The most common is the Suvian wolf, ranging throughout both Virgis and Toria. The Suvian wolf is known for it's gray fur, though it can also be shades of white, reddish brown, and black. They form packs that average six or seven members, though some can be as large as fifteen if the hunting is good. Packs are lead by an alpha male and female. In the northern Dark Woods and the forests beneath the Torian mountains there is a larger sub-species of wolf known as the Dessian wolf. The fur of the Dessian wolf is always a darker shade of brown, gray, or black. They are more solidly built, taller, and have thicker fur than their more common cousins. Their packs are smaller, usually averaging six members at most, and are also lead by an alpha pair. Dessian wolves can only be found in teh Draon Woods. The third sub-species is a smaller wolf native to the land surrounding the Masmodian deserts. Known as the Masmodian wolf, it is only slightly larger than a coyote and is usually tan or brown in color with thinner fur. They live in small, loosely organized packs and hunt small prey in the arid areas in the south.
Coyotes- Coyotes range throughout all of Suviel and are considered a pest by many, terrorizing farm animals in rural areas and killing pets that aren't contained indoors. Opportunistic hunters, they will eat anything from human trash and carrion to small rodents and reptiles. They hunt both in small packs and alone and are rarely a threat to people even when in a group. Highly adaptable, they are able to survive in all three kingdoms easily.
Foxes- The common red fox ranges throughout the territory of both Virgis and Toria. Its bright fur blends in best within the forests where it does much of its hunting. Though it is not uncommon to find it near developed areas, scavenging trash or finding ways into chicken coops. They are known for being clever animals. Their cousin, the gray fox; has a smaller range in the forests of Virgis, preferring the lower elevations. They are less common than the red fox but no less resourceful or clever. Found in the deserts of Masmous is the sand fox which is usually smaller with sandy brown or tan fur. Their ears are slightly longer than those of their northern cousins and they are well adapted for living and hunting in the driest parts of the desert.
Birds of Prey- Suviel is home to a variety of birds of prey. The greater spotted and imperial eagles are the masters of the skies. Larger than any other airborne creature, they will prey on smaller birds, rodents, and the young of some larger species. Hawks and osprey are next in line, with hawks favoring open land and forests for hunting and osprey nesting near bodies of water where they can fish. The smaller kestrels prefer to hunt in open areas where they can easily see such rodents as mice. During the night the ruler of the skies are the silent owls. Suviel is home to several species of owl, including the eagle owl, long-eared owl, boreal owl, scops owl and the more well know barn and great gray owls.
Fishing Squirrel- There are many squirrels, from the large fox squirrel to the smaller red squirrel and their flying varients, found throughout Suviel. However, the most terrifying of them all is the fishing squirrel, a large squirrel species that is native only to Suviel. Unlike its cousins, the fishing squirrel's primary food source is meat - specifically fish - and it is an aggressive predator. Though rare, these large rodents have been observed using bait to lure fish to the surface before grabbing them with sharp claws and fangs. These squirrels are also capable swimmers with webbed paws and can hold their breath for several minutes, giving them the opportunity to take down larger fish. They are territorial animals and defend their homes valiantly against all intruders, including people. They live in monogamous pairs that control a single territory of about ten miles.
Warg- The warg is a large, wolf-like apex predator that stands taller than even the brutish Dessian Wolf. With elongated canines, a flat head, muscular upper body, and shaggy coats that come in shades of black, gray and brown. They can be naturally, incredibly ugly. They can grow as tall as five feet, or the height of an average human. What a warg lacks in looks, they make up for with their intelligence. A pack species, wargs will take over as the alpha of a pack of wolves and use the numbers to do its bidding. Additionally, wargs are well known for being tenacious, going through great lengths to achieve their goals. They are capable of studying and learning the habits of their quarry before striking, making them dangerous enemies. Typically they hunt large game and predators, but in some instances; they will turn their attention to people. Wargs are specific to the Draon Woods of the north.
Orous- A cross between wargs and and the rur mastiff, the orous is an incredibly loyal creature that bonds with only one master in it's lifetime. Because of it's long lifespan, it bonds best with similarly long-lived species such as vampires. While it may bond with a human, when its master dies it goes insane and becomes unimaginably destructive, causing it to kill anything that tries to stop it. Orous can grow to be four feet tall, some growing even taller. They are very intelligent and understand language very well despite their inability to speak it themselves. They are great problem solvers and will find ways to entertain themselves if they are left alone without stimulation for long periods of time. It is suggested that they be allowed to hunt or track at least as an exercise daily so as to prevent unwanted behavior, such as digging, chewing or escaping.
Jyd- The jyd is a unicorn-like creature the size of a small roe deer. It is most common in the southern reaches of Suviel, throughout Masmous. Omnivorous, it will eat whatever is available from grass and roots to meat. The jyd is rarely seen, and then only by those Masmodians who are so drunk that they are known to hallucinate. The jyd are mischievous little creatures who enjoy playing tricks on the drunken participants of ceremonies and festivals. Their tricks are harmless and those who witness them are often so drunk that no one will believe anyone who tries to tell them of the creature they witnessed. The jyd has a single horn in the middle of its head and has thin fur for the southern climate. It's appearance resembles that of a horse, its fur comes in several light shades of cream to white.
Bax- The bax is very similar in appearance to the domesticated house cat, though it tends to grow a little bit larger. These mysterious creatures come in varying shades of cream and tan. Rarely they can be a color as light as white or as dark as orange. Because their appearance is so similar to that of a house cat it is almost impossible to know how many - or if - there have been any sightings of the elusive creature. They tend to flock toward cities and large towns to be closer to people. Their diet is similar to that of a regular cat and they even enjoy catnip to an extent. However, their behavior is very different from that of their feline cousins. Bax are very benevolent in nature and frequently offer assistance to the people they see. Sometimes they are called the "Blessing Cat" since they have been known to bring good luck and have even gone as far as helping people out of difficult situations. They are highly intelligent creatures capable of complicated thoughts and emotions.
Feask- The feask is a small, crepuscular lizard that can be identified by the ring of orange or reddish scales around it's eyes and the four rows of backward-pointing, curved dorsal scales. Though small, it is quite strong for it's size and has strong, stout legs. Most of its body is brown in color, with shades varying with the individual. Their undersides are usually a lighter shade of cream or light brown and their eyes are almost always a dark brown. The feask is a shy creature, hiding under forest debris or rocks, depending on where they live. They are found throughout Suviel, and perhaps much of Vaer, though they differ slightly from region to region. Desert feasks tend to be lighter in color, for example. Though generally not dangerous, the feask can breathe steam and small sparks of flame. They emit sparks with a burp like sound and can breathe small spurts of flame about the size of the flame on a candle capable of burning flesh quite easily, though not badly; and only for short moments. Most of the time they breath hot steam to scare away potential predators.
Rhydrix- The Rhydrix is a large, majestic bird that has rarely been seen by people. There are very few of these birds in existence, largely because they are highly territorial. There is usually only a single mating pair within three-hundred mile radius. They are more common in areas that experience thunderstorms. In fact, the more storm-ridden an area the more likely there is to be Rhydrix. There will often be multiple mating pairs if the storms are strong enough throughout regular intervals. During a storm they fly within the great thunderhead clouds, lightning dancing across their feathers. During the mating season there must be a storm before the mating ritual can take place. Usually only one chick is hatched at a time, though on rare occasions there may be two or three eggs laid. These majestic birds are usually orange or yellow in color, turning to shimmering shades of red, orange, and yellow along their tails and wings. They have a beautiful, brightly colored crest of feathers on their heads. It is considered a good omen to see a Rhydrix.
Dragon Feask- The dragon feask, or giant feask, is a larger relative of the smaller, shy, lizard-like feask. They are rare, solitary creatures that only socialize during the mating season. This is for the best, however, since they have a temper to match their fiery breath. The predators of the family, the dragon feask is much larger than it's tiny cousin. They can be as heavy as three hundred pounds, grow to fifteen feet in length from nose to tail tip, and stand up to four feet tall at the shoulder with the head reaching up to six feet. Do not be fooled by the name: 'dragon', however. These lizards are flightless creatures, even if they do breathe fire. Though they are similar to their cousin, the smaller feask, they are slightly different in appearance. Their scales are varying shades of brown depending on the region they live in. Few live in forests, for their size does not make it easy to navigate through trees and underbrush. Its scales are heavily armored and taper into sharp, bony points along its sides with elongated occipital spines at the back of it's head. A thick plate of scales also serves as protective eye ridges. Unlike its small cousin, it can breathe full flames and even sustain them for a short period of time. This makes it exceptionally dangerous, as it has a nasty temper and will attack anything that comes near it, including its own kind. During the mating season, males will fight to the death over the right to a female.
Behemoth- A rare, massive creature that inhabits the seas around Suviel, the behemoth typically stays near the surface of the ocean. It's back looks similar to a rocky island with vines, tropical trees, and moss growing from crevices in the massive shell. Similar to a sea turtle, it has flippers in place of legs. Unlike a turtle, it's neck is quite long and very thick near the base where it meets the shell. A long tail drags behind the massive creature, helping it to steer itself in the water. Despite living in the water, it is similar to whales in that it must breathe fresh air from the surface of the ocean. It can hold it's breath for well over an hour, though the actual figure is unknown. It lays eggs in the sand in shallower waters. The eggs are as hard as the rocky shell of the beast, making them almost impossible to destroy. This is because mating and reproduction is so rare among the species that the eggs must be as durable as possible. Though they are peaceful creatures most of the time, they will guard their eggs and young ferociously and are aggressive when provoked. They feed on large fish found throughout the ocean. Because it takes so much to feed a single behemoth a mating pair will maintain a territory up two two hundred miles in all directions.
Ilyph- Lurking in the depths of the ocean, ilyphs are monstrosities that lure their prey to a horrible death. They are humanoids that are often mistaken as mermaids. The lower half of their body sports a tail not unlike that of a whale or dolphin. Their upper half is like that of a human, but the skin is grayish and the figure is gaunt, as if it is near death. The skin of it's arms transitions to scales and fin-like protrusions at the elbow. Its fingers are long, thin and end in cruel claws that can cut as easily as a knife. Its eyes seem to glow with hatred and the pupil is only a thin slit of black in a sea of white. Its teeth are so sharp they can slice as cleanly as a razor. Their hair is thin and straggled, almost always it is some shade of black or dark brown. Their thin form makes them glide through the water with such ease that they can disappear in an instant. Under the water they communicate in a complex series of shrieks and clicks. Above the water their shrieks turn into what sounds like a beautiful song with the ability to hypnotize those who hear it. This is how they lure their prey into the water, where they will inevitably kill them. While not very social creatures, they will hunt in groups of two or three. One will breach the surface to sing, luring in the prey, while the others will lie in wait until they can grab the target and drag them to the depths. Despite this, each has its own territory and trespasses are not taken lightly. If a trespass occurs outside of a hunt there is often a fight to the death, with the winner expanding his or her own territory. When it comes time to mate, the males with the best song - or shriek - have their choice of females, but will mate with only one for the season. They are not monogamous, sometimes switching mates with each mating season. They give birth to a single child, which matures quickly.
Nichur- A carnivorous plant found in the Draon Woods and Farzi Grove, the nichur is frightening sight. Large and capable of eating creatures as large as a Jyd or small deer, the plant is a dangerous predator for those who are unaware of its presence. Similar to the venus fly trap in appearance, it senses movement near it before it clamps its jaws shut around its prey, trapping them with a vice-grip and hidden teeth. It chews its food while also secreting an acid to make it easier to digest and absorb the nutrients. The sound it makes while chewing is pretty gruesome and enough to terrify even the most stoic of men. Unlike most plants, the nichur hosts a digestive system and swallows its prey after softening it. It also emits spores similar to nightshade. Anything in the vicinity of the plant that inhales the spores will deteriorate rapidly without treatment, sometimes leading to death.
